Our Story

Finnies the Jeweller is a renowned independent family business, founded in Aberdeen in 1957. Our passion for jewellery and watches combines an international luxury mindset with highly personalised service that comes from being deeply rooted in our community and committed to our customers as individuals. Our mission to serve began when Ron and Peggy Finnie established a modest watch repair business from premises in St Nicholas Street. Through dedication and perseverance, they grew the business and established the magnificent flagship store on George Street that you can see today.

Walk into our world and you will discover one of the most impressive and expertly curated jewellery collections you are ever likely to experience under one roof. A combination of Finnies’ own designs with our edit of highly desirable branded jewellery, across a surprisingly broad spectrum of price points. We also showcase some of the world’s finest watch brands, including many limited-edition timepieces that our impeccable relationships within the industry enable us to source.

At the heart of the business today are three generations of the Finnie family. Two of Ron and Peggy’s children followed in their parents’ footsteps, with Sarah heading up the diamond and jewellery side and Matthew taking charge of his greatest passion: the watches portfolio. Sarah’s two children are also full-time members of the team now driving the business forward. Both Dominique and Declan are qualified gemmologists, with Dominique additionally trained at Chanel Fine Jewellery. The unbroken thread of expertise that has run through the business since the 1950s is enhanced by a team of around 40 knowledgeable, longstanding staff; and by a commitment to fine craftsmanship delivered through our in-house workshop.

We have four skilled goldsmiths, a watch technician and a full-time professional diamond-setter to ensure that our work – whether creating something new or reinvigorating an antique – is of the highest calibre. Fashions in luxury jewellery – especially branded jewellery – and watches make for an ever-changing landscape. Our family and team members regularly travel to international trade shows to ensure we are in-the-know with the latest trends and technical developments, so that our customers can be too, if they wish to be. The advent of e-commerce and social media have reinforced Finnies’ reputation as a local jeweller with global appeal. We can now talk to our customers 24/7 by WhatsApp, receive orders from Hong Kong and find ourselves tagged in the Instagram stories of couples getting engaged up a mountain in Scotland. We love this vibrant, multi layered way of working, which we find contributes so much to the fun of jewellery and watch buying. We are also dedicated to the traditional ways. Our beautiful flagship was more than doubled in size during 2020. We are closely affiliated with many charities in and around the Granite City, and with the development of the city itself. Our close-knit sales teams are never happier than when meeting customers in person.
